Climate change is the most pressing threat to the future of young people, and those already most vulnerable. The special report recently released by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) - “Global Warming of 1.5 °C” - indicates that limiting warming to 1.5°C is paramount. If we overshoot this level of warming, we will enter into a state of climate instability, with deep consequences for human existence.
The IPCC found that emissions need to decline by about 45% from 2010 levels by 2030 and reaching net zero around 2050 in order to meet a 1.5°C target. We also know that the known fossil fuel reserves, if burned, represent emissions which far exceed our remaining ‘carbon budget’: we simply cannot mine these reserves. If we fail to act on this evidence, it would not only be willfully endangering our environment, but also the health and wellbeing of future generations.
Beyond the effects of climate change, offshore oil and gas exploration also causes a range of harmful environmental effects that puts at risk Dunedin's native marine and coastal wildlife and foreshore regions. This includes the disruption of wildlife migration routes from noise pollution, risk of oil spills, and use of toxic chemicals and other substances that pollute the air and water.189 signatures
We oppose the proposed oil and gas drilling off the coast of Otago by OMV. We need to move to renewable energy now in order to mitigate the effects of climate change. The DCC has already acknowledged that continued use of fossil fuels is contributing to climate change; now we demand action! Specifically, we request the Council:
- Writes to the Minister reiterating the DCC’s opposition of this activity and seeking a revocation of the permit;
- Submits in opposition to the marine discharge consent and commissions relevant experts to provide evidence on this matter;
- Engages further with the Government to highlight and seek action around the inadequacy of spill control response measures;
- Takes other substantive steps to oppose OMV’s proposed activity
