  • Let's Get Wellington Moving - Golden Mile

    Step 1: Concept 1 Streamline

What do you like about this concept? Why?

    • Less access for private vehicles which is good because it discourages this unsustainable mode of transport
    • More space for pedestrians which increases the liveability and vibrancy of the inner city because people will want to spend more time there
    • Increases space to wait at bus stops

What don't you like about this concept? Why?

    • Doesn't make enough changes to significantly improve bus speed
    • Private vehicles still have access which slows down buses, is dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians, and makes the space less enjoyable
    • No separated cycle path which means cyclists are forced to share space with vehicles which is dangerous and wont encourage cycling
    • Not ambitious enough and wont do enough to reduce the carbon emissions from transport in Wellington

    Step 2: Concept 2 Prioritise

What do you like about this concept? Why?

    • Will make buses much faster which encourages public transport use
    • More space for pedestrians which increases the liveability and vibrancy of the inner city because people will want to spend more time there
    • Removes all private vehicles which is good because it discourages this unsustainable mode of transport

What don't you like about this concept? Why?

    • No separated cycle path which means cyclists are forced to share space with vehicles which is dangerous and wont encourage cycling
    • Double bus lanes in each direction is unnecessary and makes the public space less attractive to be in. Would prefer priority was given to pedestrian space

    Step 3: Concept 3 Transform

What do you like about this concept? Why?

    • Gives highest priority to pedestrians which will have a big improvement for the liveability of our city
    • Dramatically increases space for pedestrians which will have a positive effect on businesses because people will be more likely to spend money if they can walk, sit and spend time.
    • More space to create beautiful public areas and parks and for greenery
    • There is a separated, safe cycle path which will encourage active transport and be safer for cyclists and pedestrians
    • Will make buses much faster which encourages public transport use
    • Removes all private vehicles which is good because it discourages this unsustainable mode of transport
    • This option is most likely to significantly reduce carbon emissions from transport in Wellington

What don't you like about this concept? Why?

    Step 4:

What do you think about having a dedicated or shared space for people on bikes and scooters on Courtenay Place?

This is a great idea, it’s important to have a seperate space for bikes and scooters to keep them (and pedestrians) safe. It should be dedicated, not shared.

While we can’t fit dedicated cycle lanes on all of the Golden Mile, would you like to see cycling facilities on Lambton Quay, north of Panama Street? If so, what type of cycling facility would you like it to be? On-road, shared or separated?

Yes, I would like to see a separated cycle path to keep cyclists, scooters, and pedestrians safe.

Access for taxis and delivery / maintenance vehicles: Do you think access should be provided for these vehicles?

Delivery and maintenance vehicles should have access at off-peak times to support local businesses.

Taxis and other ride-share vehicles should not be allowed on the Golden Mile because they will be disruptive to the traffic flow and slow down buses. Allowing them on at off-peak times will be confusing and will likely lead to the rules being ignored at times.

If yes, what hours do you think these vehicles should have access to the Golden Mile?

    Other

Additional comments (we'd really like to know what these changes would mean for you)

Only delivery and maintenance vehicles between 9pm and 6am. 7pm to 7am is too much time as busses are still running reasonably frequently just before 7am and just after 7pm.

Public spaces: What do you like about the design of these streets?

    • Places to sit
    • Greenery and native planting
    • Public art
    • continuous footpath level to provide an accessible and seamless walking experience
    • Safe from vehicles

What don't you like about the design of these streets?

    • Too much clutter makes them less accessible to people with disabilities
    • Too many hard, impervious surfaces that are slippery in the rain
    • Not enough permeable surfaces for rainwater to drain through
    • Not enough native plantings
    • Not always enough shade or other protection from the elements
    • Designs don’t feel “uniquely Aotearoa”, would like to see more mana whenua led design
    • Would like to see play areas for children

    Step 5:

Lambton Quay: What concept do you like best?
