Have your say on the RMA Fasttrack Bill

In a bid to create jobs and boost economic activity an amendment to the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) has been introduced. The RMA governs Aotearoa’s resources and gives the public an opportunity to have a say on projects that might adversely affect them. This amendment would give the Minister for the Environment the power to ‘fast-track’ selected infrastructure projects by bypassing RMA notification and consultation requirements.

While Generation Zero acknowledges the need for the Government to set up a COVID-19 recovery plan, fast-tracking infrastructure projects to boost economic activity must not come at the expense of transparency, citizen engagement and protection for our environment and climate.

In the proposed amendment there are 11 projects which will immediately begin the fast-track process, permission for KiwiRail Holdings Limited and the NZ Transport Authority to undertake permitted activities without prior consent and a process by which public and private entities can apply to the Minister for the Environment for fast-track approval.

It is important that we all have our say to the Select Committee so that Parliament can make the reforms needed to ensure democratic rights are not taken away, Te Tiriti o Waitangi is upheld,  and climate justice is centred in the Minister's decision making.

We have created a quick submit form so it is fast and easy to make a submission to the select committee. If you have a bit more time to have your say we would encourage you to use 350’s submission guide and submit it to the Select Committee here
