The Otago Regional Council (ORC) has a proposal for "flat" fares on our buses. This will happen alongside the transition from GoCard to the Bee Card, which will allow a new tag-on tag-off bus card to be introduced later on in winter.
The ORC has proposed the removal of the five fare zones, tertiary student concession and the GoExtra concession. They plan on replacing the old system with one fare zone and keeping three simple fares plus free travel for SuperGold cardholders at any time. They have proposed:
- $2 with a Bee Card for all (other than youth)
- $1.50 with a Bee Card for youth (5–18-year-olds)
- $3 cash fare (no Bee Card) for all passengers
However, tertiary and GoExtra users would pay the adult fare with the Bee Card, but, it does mean wherever you travel on the ORC network you pay one single flat fare for the entire trip.
At Generation Zero Dunedin, we support the proposal of the flat fare, but we would like your thoughts and say on it too! We propose a potential new timetable to include night buses, allowing safer passage in the city after dark for shift workers, students or anyone else. We would potentially like a decrease in the default flat cash fare for all passengers, instead of $3 decreasing it to $1.50.
