Local Elections

Local body elections are happening in September - October this year and it is critical we vote to ensure local councils reflect the realities of our communities! We know how important local councils are to meeting the core needs of our communities, by providing vibrant, safe, climate-just, accessible spaces and infrastructure.

Māori wards

In addition to electing representatives, 42 councils across the motu are holding referendums on whether or not to keep Māori wards. We have seen the value of Māori wards in councils to the climate justice kaupapa, which Te Tiriti justice and tino rangatiratanga are central to here in Aotearoa.

Our campaign

Since March, Generation Zero has been working hard on a hope-filled campaign around local body elections, rooted in our members’ and communities’ values. In past elections we have put together candidate scorecards during election time, centred around climate justice, to inform voters about who is running for election in their area. For these local body elections, we have been working with aligned kaupapa to create a comprehensive survey to send to candidates to better understand their views on different climate justice issues and present scorecards to help people make a more informed vote. Therefore, we’d love to hear from you about what you care about most in this election, so we can ask more questions that you want the answers to!

Tell us what climate justice issue really matters to you this election by responding to this poll.

Your answers will help us prioritise what topics we survey candidates on. We will also draw inspiration from your answers to put together a collage-style piece of art that will be shared on billstickers, social media, and flyers. We look forward to sharing and amplifying our communities’ hopes and desires for climate justice to push for action that we care about and deserve!
